LEARN TO TURN WORKSHOPS

  • Learn to Turn (L2T) workshops are designed for ages 16 and older; no age exceptions.

  • No experience is required for L2T Beginner’s Turning Workshops.

  • L2T experience or equivalent required for L2T Intermediate/Advanced/Specialty Workshops.

L2T is a one-time beginner's pottery class great for individuals, families, friends, and dates. Get a feel for how clay moves on the wheel before investing in a series of continuing education classes or expensive studio equipment. Celebrate a birthday, anniversary, or other social occasion with the gift of a shared learning experience! Clay, glaze, and kiln firings included. Students receive a detailed throwing demonstration, before trying it out for themselves. Focus is on process not products. While learning to operate the equipment and access the studio space safely students will also gain firsthand knowledge of basic pottery-turning techniques. Up to 90 minutes of class is used for practicing methods of centering, opening, and pulling up a cylinder. An experienced instructor will work with each student to prepare 1 pot on the wheel (up to 3 may be kept) that can be fired and picked up in 3 to 4 weeks. Group learning experiences are not equivalent to receiving private lessons, as each student may be in a different work stage, requiring alternating levels of attention throughout the event. Beginners are welcome to register for more L2T workshops to continue practicing their potter's wheel basic skills. Private workshop requests can be emailed to education@ncpotterycenter.org.

DISCLAIMER

Due to the nature of working with ceramics, not all wares are guaranteed to make it out of the kiln successfully. This is especially true if instructions are not carefully followed. Inconsistencies in thickness and incomplete attachments can cause cracks and other breakage at any point in the process. Minor imperfections and variations in the clay and glaze are to be expected. Every effort will be made to oversee the utmost care of finishing student work, but the NC Pottery Center and its staff are not liable for damage or loss of wares that are not properly formed.
