hyalyn: AMERICA’S FINEST PORCELAIN (August 28 – Decmember 18, 2021)

Known for its potters and potteries, North Carolina has hosted traditional artisans who made utilitarian jugs, crocks, and churns, unschooled “fancyware” potters who made colorful and sometimes highly decorated objects, and fine art ceramists. All of this is well known. Less known is the history of Hickory’s Hyalyn Porcelain Company where porcelain clay was slip cast into all sorts of adeptly designed wares.

Founded by H. Leslie Moody and Frances Johnson Moody in 1945, Hyalyn Porcelain Company produced the work of notable designers like Eva Zeisel, Michael and Rosemary Lax, Georges Briard, Esta Brodey, Erwin Kalla, Herbert Cohen, and Rookwood’s Wilhelmine Rehm.

hyalyn – America’s Finest Porcelain, in conjunction with the release of Stephen C. Compton’s book by the same name, introduces the exhibit’s audience to some of Hyalyn Porcelain Company’s many finely-made, yet affordable creations.
