Wheel-Throwing Boot Camp with Jared Zehmer

May 25, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

$105 – $120

Are you a beginner-to-intermediate potter looking to increase your confidence and skills on the wheel? Our all-day throwing workshop with Seagrove production potter Jared Zehmer will whip you into shape!

Jared will lead participants in a production-focused, wheel-intensive workshop with an emphasis on skill development through repetition. He will introduce participants to the process of production pottery-throwing, including:

  • preparing evenly-sized clay balls for a day of throwing
  • achieving consistent cylinder and bowl forms
  • introductory trimming techniques
  • pulling and attaching handles
  • effective traditional and DIY turning tools

Jared will share the most useful techniques he has learned in building a consistent, high-quality body of pots. By the end of this workshop, participants should be familiar with wheel-throwing techniques which could help them to create multiple bowls and cylinders of a consistent size and quality.

For more information, or to register, email membership@ncpotterycenter.org or call (336)873-8430. Advance payment is required to secure a slot in this class.

Cost: NCPC Members: $105 | Non-Members: $120

Cost includes all instruction and materials. Participants may want to bring basic turning tools that they are comfortable with. We will be taking a break for lunch; participants can order lunch from one of Seagrove’s nearby restaurants or bring a bag lunch.

Jared Zehmer has lived and worked as a production potter in Seagrove for over 15 years, turning pots for more than a dozen shops in the area. Jared holds a BFA in Ceramics from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, and has served as an Artist-in-Residence at the North Carolina Pottery Center. In his free time, he makes his own line of functional ceramics and enjoys experimenting with kiln-building.
