Historic Pub Games! To celebrate the North Carolina Pottery Center’s groundbreaking exhibition, The Last Drop: Intoxicating Pottery, Past and Present, on display through Saturday, April 7th, join us on Thursday, April 5th for an evening of historic pub games!

In 17th and 18th-century England, the pub was a hub of communal activity and fellowship—a place where people could gather to connect with one another and debate contemporary ideas. Among the activities that often took place in the pub were competitive games involving dice and cards, which fostered an atmosphere of sociability. We’ll learn about the 17th century pub, then play a few games from the period. There may even be a mystery prize awarded!

Ready to test your luck? A potluck at 6 pm will begin the evening’s events, followed by games at 7 pm. Come out for a great night of food and community! This event is free and open to the public, but is for adults only. For more information, call the Pottery Center at 336-873-8430.

This program is presented in conjunction with the Pottery Center’s current exhibition, The Last Drop: Intoxicating Pottery, Past and Present. For thousands of years, potters have fashioned clay vessels for the ritual consumption of fermented and distilled beverages. These vessels not only reflect the technological and stylistic concerns of their time and place, but also a wide variety of cultural celebrations as well as proscriptions related to the making, distribution, ceremonial usage, and consumption of alcoholic drinks.

The Last Drop showcases fifteen leading contemporary potters, from North Carolina and around the United States, who created new ceramic work inspired by specific 17th and 18th century English and German drinking vessels from the Chipstone Foundation’s exemplary collection. We were not seeking a reproduction or a facsimile necessarily, but an interpretive or conceptually based object that reflects upon historic materials, designs, and processes interpreted through the lens of cultural commentary, societal views on alcohol consumption, and the ongoing role of fired clay in alcohol-related wares.

Location: The NCPC Educational Building located behind the NC Pottery Center at 233 East Avenue, Seagrove, 27341.
